Understanding UK Alcohol Licensing

Selling or supplying alcohol in the UK requires proper licensing under the Licensing Act 2003. Here’s what you need to know:

Premises Licence

A premises licence is required for venues that regularly sell alcohol or provide entertainment. This applies to fixed locations like our Washington Everyone Active Leisure Centre café. Learn more about alcohol licensing requirements on the official government website.

Temporary Event Notices (TENs)

For one-off events or temporary occasions, we use Temporary Event Notices (TENs). A TEN allows us to serve alcohol at your event for up to 168 hours (7 days) with a maximum of 499 people in attendance.

Key facts about TENs:

  • Must be submitted at least 10 working days before the event (late TENs can be submitted 5-9 working days before, but with more risk)
  • Personal licence holders can apply for up to 50 TENs per year
  • Non-personal licence holders can apply for up to 5 TENs per year
  • Each premises can host up to 15 TENs per year (or 21 days total)

Personal Licence

Our Director holds a Personal Alcohol Licence, which authorizes the supervision of alcohol sales. Every premises selling alcohol must have a designated premises supervisor with a valid personal licence.

We’ll work with you to determine whether your event requires a TEN or falls under existing premises licensing, and we’ll handle the application process.
